A thorough cleaning of your pet’s cage is required once weekly. Remove and wash the cage tray and perches, and wash the area around the cage. Make sure all toys are clean and damage-free, without loose or broken parts that could hurt your pet. Once a month, you’ll need to clean the entire cage with a disinfectant solution. Rinse well, and dry everything before returning your bird to his cage.

If you have a budgie or cockatiel, you can begin to hand tame your bird after the first few weeks of getting acquainted. First, open thecage door and insert your hand; talk softly and reassuringly to your pet as you offer him a little treat, such as a piece of air-poppedpopcorn or a sunflower seed.

Once your bird trusts you enough to take food from your hand, you can pass a perch or thin stick into the cage and gently press it againstyour pet; with time, he should hop up onto the stick. After that, you can work to get your bird to step from the stick onto your finger.

If your bird seems sick, or has been injured, seek the help of a qualified avian vet. Most vets see very few birds, andhave little experience diagnosing and treating them.

A canary or budgerigar is a particularly good pet for a family with very limited space or modest means. They are suitable for peopleliving alone, especially flat dwellers.

Birds require specialized shelter from the elements, protection from natural enemies such as cats, dogs and wild birds, a correct andbalanced daily diet, and the opportunity to take adequate exercise.

Caring for your pet bird is not difficult once you know the basics. The first step in bird care is understanding your bird's behavior as this can give you insight into your bird's health and mood. It is most vital to ensure your bird receives the correct nutrition as thiscan affect both his/her physical and mental health.

The birdcage should be located in an area where temperature remains fairly constant. There is not need to cover a bird’s cage at night unless temperature variation is extreme. I like to place cages in areas where natural lighting and conditions are good for the growth a philodendron houseplant. An area adjoining the kitchen is often ideal for a single bird since the presence of people active in the area may relieve the bird’s boredom.

If a pet bird breathes through its open mouth, you know it's sick. Buy a bird antibiotic at the pet store, pulverize it, and add it toyour bird's drinking water. If this doesn't help, get it to the vet.
