| By Riley Santoso Many people think that American Pit Bull Terriers are aggressive, mean dogs that harm people on a whim. However, despite their reputation, pit bulls are actually no more likely to harm you, if raised in the proper environment, than other dogs. In fact, it should be noted that when it comes to any kind of dog, the way you train and raise them determines the type of personality and behavior they will develop over time. American Pit Bull Terriers are actually great family dogs, and perfect for those looking for a breed that is fun, attentive and playful. In fact, according to the American Canine Temperament Testing Association, pit bulls have the fourth highest passing rate of 122 breeds tested in terms of canine temperament. Pit bulls are very loyal dogs and eager to please their owners. However, responsible ownership is the key to owning a happy, content and kind American Pit Bull Terrier. Any breed of dog will react to a negative environment; meaning, if you take a Lab or Beagle and subject them to frequent pain and abuse, they will react viciously as well. Therefore, American Pit Bull Terriers have an extremely undeserved reputation, mostly because a criminalized population has taken advantage of this breed’s eagerness to be loved and accepted by their owners. Therefore, it is important, when choosing a pit bull, to be informed about their history. In addition to information on breeding (Are they purebred or mixed? If they are mixed, what other breed are they mixed with?), you should have access to medical/health treatments, as well as information about the environment in which they were reared before coming to you. This information will give you some insight into the dog’s temperament. Caring for an American Pit Bull Terrier is similar to caring for other breeds, meaning they must be walked at least once a day, particularly if yours will be primarily inside. They must be fed several times per day; however, the choice between wet and dry food is up to you and depends on your dog’s preference. The type of toys to purchase will depend on the personality of the dog; however, many pits enjoy pig ears, bones, and squeaky toys. When it comes to playing, it doesn’t pay to be aggressive with any kind of dog. Playing fetch or light tug-of-war with a rope or towel is okay, but anything more aggressive will likely bring out a more aggressive side of the dog’s personality. Encourage more friendly, fun, interactive play when spending time with your pit bull. American Pit Bull Terriers are actually great dogs to have as a family dogs or just as a faithful companion. They are sweet, loving and just as deserving of a happy, comfortable life as any other breed out there.
